Tobacco Prevention and Control Branch CDC Funded Coalitions

Using federal funds from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Office on Smoking and Health, the NC Tobacco Prevention and Control Branch funds eight local coalitions who work in their communities to address the following goals:

  • Identifying and addressing tobacco-related health disparities among populations
  • Eliminating exposure to secondhand smoke, and
  • Providing resources for tobacco users who want to quit.

These programs have been funded since 1992, when North Carolina received a grant from the National Cancer Institute to participate in a 17-state project called ASSIST (American Stop Smoking Intervention Study). Although the study ended in 1999, some local coalitions continue using the name ASSIST because of name recognition in their communities.
