      • On QuitlineNC, click "For Medical Professionals" and scroll down to list item 2 for its version of the "Guide..." in PDF format. This review of available cessation resources makes it easy for the busy health professional to Ask, Advise, and Refer tobacco users to the NC Tobacco Use Quitline, including fax referral, and web based resources.

      • The health professional completes the Provider Section of the fax referral form and the patient who would like a Quit Coach to call them completes the Patient Section. With the patient’s signature, refer them to the Quitline by faxing the completed form to the 800 number provided.
  • Tobacco Use Clinical Practice Guidelines (Evidence-Based Cessation Counseling Methods) Video
    • Developed by the Northwest Tobacco Prevention Coalition, based at the Appalachian District Health Department, this video gives a brief overview of the Tobacco Use Clinical Practice Guidelines for Health Professionals and the North Carolina Tobacco Use Quitline. It serves as a great review for professionals already trained on the guidelines, or an introduction to those not yet trained.
  • Quitline Ask, Advise, Refer Card (DOC, 3.82 MB; PDF, 253 KB)
    • Health care providers who counsel their patients to quit tobacco with even a minimal (less than 3 minute) intervention can make a difference.  In fact, smokers who receive clinician advice and assistance with quitting report greater satisfaction with their health care than those who do not.  Click here for a downloadable tool to Ask, Advise, and Refer (DOC, 3.82 MB; PDF, 253 KB) your patients to cessation resources.

It represents a statewide tobacco use cessation partnership that promotes awareness, develops resources and conducts trainings to help North Carolinians successfully quit using tobacco.

    • At this web link, learn about this brochure series of brief screening, counseling and referral tools that help healthcare professionals advise, counsel and refer their patients to expert treatment and support. Materials are available in English, Spanish as well as materials aimed specifically at Native Americans. Ordering information is available at this link.

    • This website was developed to help child healthcare clinicians tailor their office setting to address parental tobacco use in a routing and effective manner using downloadable tools that can be adapted to your practice.
  • N.C. STEP Curriculum for Spit Tobacco Users
    • The N.C. STEP Curriculum for Spit Tobacco Users is aimed at the professional who plans to present this science-based curriculum primarily to students in an effort to help those who use spit tobacco quit and to prevent students from starting to use spit tobacco.
  • Counseling for Change: An Online Smoking Cessation Course
    • This online course covers the 5As and a stages of change tutorial for health professionals. This course is free, unless you request continuing education credits, which are available for a $20 fee.
