For every person who dies of a smoking-related disease, 20 more people suffer with at least one serious illness from smoking. That’s the bad news. The good news is that you can quit and there are benefits to quitting at any age, regardless of how long you have used tobacco.
Quitting tobacco is hard for two reasons. First, the nicotine in tobacco is very addictive. Second, tobacco use is a very strong habit. Both the habit and the addiction have to be considered in any quit plan that you use. There are many effective ways to “kick the habit” including individual counseling from health care professionals, local cessation programs, group counseling, and Quit Coach support from the NC Tobacco Use Quitline. There are many effective medications that can help adults with nicotine withdrawal when quitting. These include nicotine replacement products (patch, gum, nasal spray, inhaler, lozenge) and other drugs in pill form (Zyban, Chantix). A combination of counseling or coaching along with medication result in the best chance of quitting for good.
It can take more than one quit attempt to quit for good. The important thing is to learn each time what worked and what didn’t work for each quit attempt and use what you learned the next time. This way you are more likely to quit for good the next time you try.
When quitting, remember: Set a quit date, tell friends, family and co-workers that you would like their support, make a list of things you can do to help with cravings (chew straws, drink water, take a walk, call a friend, eat a healthy snack), and remove all tobacco products and ashtrays from your environment on your quit day.
North Carolina has many resources that can help you quit using tobacco, such as the Quitline, the Good Health Directory, a list of on-line cessation programs and informational websites, health benefits of quitting, and information on how much money you can save by quitting tobacco.
Don’t forget to set rewards for yourself as you become a non-tobacco user. Remember, the best reward is getting control of your life and your health! You can quit, we can help!
